771 vaccine doses given in Northeast Michigan

ALPENA — As of Tuesday, 771 doses of coronavirus vaccine had been given in Northeast Michigan counties, according to the most current state data available Friday.

That includes 508 doses given in Alpena County, 133 in Presque Isle County, 45 in Montmorency County, and 85 doses in Alcona County.

Statewide, 86,626 doses had been given as of Tuesday, according to the state data.

Meanwhile, two more Northeast Michiganders died after being infected with the coronavirus, public health officials said today, including one Alpena County resident and one Presque Isle County resident.

Public health officials today reported 32 newly infected Northeast Michiganders, including six Presque Isle County residents, 22 Montmorency County residents, and four Alcona County residents.

For the second day in a row, the cumulative number of infected Alpena County residents fell, dropping by 15 since Wednesday.

District Health Department No. 4 officials could not be reached for comment. In the past, such inconsistencies were a result of incorrect information keyed in at the state level.

According to health department numbers as oftoday, 1,506 Northeast Michiganders were actively infected, meaning they’d been confirmed infected with COVID-19 but have not recovered or died, and could infect others.

As of Monday, 12 COVID-19 patients, three of whom were in intensive care, were hospitalized at MidMichigan Medical Center-Alpena, according to state data. The Alpena hospital was 30% full.

As of Wednesday, 65 people were hospitalized with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 infection across the state-designated, 18-county health care region that includes Alpena, Presque Isle, and Montmorency counties, according to state data.

Since the pandemic hit Michigan in mid-March, 2,005 Northeast Michiganders have been infected, according to local public health agencies. Of those, 446 have recovered and 53 have died.

No update of testing numbers is expected from the state or local health departments until Monday.
