Gun, drugs found after police fired upon

Jerry Alan Grove Jr.

ALPENA — A handgun and narcotics were recovered from the scene where a gunman allegedly shot at police officers attempting to make an arrest on Thursday morning, police reported Friday.

Nobody was injured in the incident at a trailer home in a deeply wooded spot behind a business on U.S.-23 South in Alpena Township.

A man arrested in conjunction with the incident — Jerry Alan Grove Jr., 27 — may or may not have been the shooter, police said.

Having received information that Grove — who was wanted on an outstanding felony arrest warrant — was in the trailer home, officers from the Alpena County Sheriff’s Office approached the trailer about 8:30 a.m. Thursday.

Before officers could get near the trailer home — where police had reason to suspect drug activity was taking place — a gunshot from the woods surrounding the trailer made officers take cover, according to Sgt. Michael Jones, of the Alpena County Sheriff’s Office, who was present at the scene.

The officers set up a watch on the only road that accesses the trailer and requested backup from a Michigan State Police tactical unit.

Grove was discovered and arrested by Michigan State Police in Alcona County later in the day Thursday, when police tracked the location of his cell phone.

Police are unable to confirm that Grove was the alleged shooter or was in the trailer home Thursday morning.

A female who fled the trailer while deputies were waiting for backup was detained and later released, police reported. She is considered a person of interest by police.

Once Michigan State Police secured the area and entered the trailer, confirming nobody was inside, officers from the Alpena County Sheriff’s Office searched the area. They found the weapon and several kinds of drugs, including what police believe to be methamphetamine, Jones reported.

The handgun found may not have been the weapon used to fire at police, Jones said.

The investigation is ongoing, according to police. Information about the incident may be shared with Jones at 989-354-9805.
