ALPENA — Firefighters hose off after fighting a fire at the Greenway Pellet facility, located on the Decorative Panels International property, early this morning. Alpena Fire Department crews were called to the Ford Avenue facility about 5 a.m. and arrived to find the metal-sided building fully involved in fire. It appeared nobody was working at the facility at the time of the fire, according to Alpena Fire Chief Bill Forbush. Nobody was injured, but fire damage to the building was extensive, Forbush reported, though it was unclear whether the structure was destroyed. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Crews were still dousing hot spots at 6:30 a.m. and remained on-scene until about 9:30 a.m.
Alpena Township Fire and Alpena Police Department members assisted at the scene. Greenway Pellet produces wood pellets that are used in grills, wood burners and fireplaces.
