ALPENA — The Alpena Public Schools Board of Education on Monday will consider approving a contract for David Rabbideau, who has accepted an offer to become the district’s new superintendent.

Board President Gordon Snow said details of the contract were still being worked out on Friday. Snow said the contract would stipulate Rabbideau’s start date and salary.

Snow said if they work out the details on Friday, and possibly Saturday, “my hope is that we will be able to consider a formal contract on Monday, which would include a starting date.”

The board of education posted the position with a salary range of $135,000 to $145,000. Former Superintendent John VanWagoner was paid $141,436, but left the district in July to become superintendent for Traverse City Area Public Schools.

In the meantime, the APS school board selected Susan Wooden as interim superintendent until a new superintendent could be hired. Wooden said on Thursday she would help Rabbideau transition into the new role once he starts with the district.

The school board earlier this month selected Rabbideau from a total of six candidates who interviewed for the position.

Rabbideau is a former assistant superintendent of Harper Woods, near Detroit, and has more than 15 years in instructional leadership, district administration, and classroom teaching.

Rabbideau said in an email to The News he is excited to begin work as soon as possible, and that as he transitions into the role of Superintendent, a top priority will be ensuring the safety and wellbeing of the district’s students and staff.

In the APS Weekly Communique, Rabbideau introduced himself as a happily married father of five children. He said he met his wife while they were teachers and held their wedding in the school gymnasium.

In the communique, Rabbideau thanked those in the community who have already shown him what a warm, welcoming, and caring community Alpena is.

“The level of support I have received thus far is so appreciated,” he said in the communique.

The board meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on the online platform Zoom. Visit Zoom.com or dial 1-312-626-6799 to attend the meeting, and enter the meeting identification number 873 3475 8233 and password apsboe.
