A 78-year-old Gaylord man who has been missing since Sunday was found dead around 7:30 p.m. Monday just off of a two-track near County Road 622 and East Branch Road in Montmorency County, according to the Michigan State Police.

Troopers from the State Police-Gaylord Post had been searching for Nelson William Wheaton, who suffered from dementia and was reported missing on Sunday after leaving his house on his Polaris side-by-side and did not return.

According to the State Police, a person who saw Wheaton laying on the ground drove to the Montmorency County Sheriff’s Office to make a report. Troopers responded to the scene and found that Wheaton had died. His Polaris was found nearby.

The cause of death remains under investigation, but officials with the State Police do not suspect foul play.
