ALPENA — The Alpena Public Schools Board of Education has named the five finalists for district superintendent who will be interviewed next week:

* APS Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Meaghan Gauthier

* Dorothy Blackwell, superintendent at Vassar Public Schools

* Craig McCane, a middle school principal at Kalamazoo Public Schools

* Myra Munroe, works as a special education teacher at Evart Public Schools and is a former superintendent at Reed City Area Public Schools

* David Rabbideau, former assistant superintendent at Harper Woods Public Schools

“Reviewing credentials, professional experience, leadership experience and accomplishments, we have selected five individuals, each from Michigan, to participate in the first round of interviews,” APS board President Gordon Snow said in an email to The News. “Each one comes to the interview with a wide range of experiences, and the interviews will help us narrow the field even further. The Board is looking forward to selecting and hiring a leader for the district with talents and skills needed to keep Alpena Public Schools moving forward.”

Two candidates will be interviewed starting at 6 p.m. Monday and three will be interviewed starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday on the online platform Zoom.

Former Alpena superintendent John VanWagoner is now superintendent for Traverse City Area Public Schools. Susan Wooden, a retired superintendent from Beaverton, is serving as interim superintendent and said she did not seek the permanent post.

CORRECTION: This story has been updated to reflect that Myra Munroe is a former superintendent at Reed City Area Public Schools, with the correct spelling of Craig McCane’s name, and to reflect that interviews begin at 6 p.m. Because of incorrect information provided to The News, that information was incorrect in an earlier version of this story.
