ALPENA — Segway scooters are now available for rent in Alpena.

Two of the electric scooters, which can be rented with a credit card through a smartphone app, were seen near the intersection of 1st Avenue and Chisholm Street on Thursday. The Segway Pass app showed another location in the parking lot across 2nd Avenue from the Post Office Thursday afternoon.

It wasn’t immediately clear who owned the scooters or where they came from.

Alpena Downtown Development Authority Executive Director Anne Gentry said Thursday she didn’t know where they came from. The website offers investors a chance to build their own fleet of scooters.

A Segway spokesperson could not be reached for comment.

The Segways are two-wheeled, motorized scooters and can help people tour cities and familiarize them with downtowns and other landmarks, according to the company’s website.

According to the app, it costs $1 to unlock the scooters and 20 cents per minute to ride them. There’s also a $10 parking surcharge and a $10 surcharge if the scooters are taken out of a GPS-defined zone.

The Segway Pass app can help locate a Segway, navigate a route, and arrive and park safely.

More information on Segways can be found online at segway.com.
