HARRISVILLE –State officials are recommending Michiganders try out Harrisville State Park after record-high water on Lake Huron forced the closure of the lone road into nearby Tawas Point State Park.

Tawas Point, in Iosco County, “has experienced unprecedented water levels, erosion, and flooding over the last few years, as well as record-breaking rainfall last month,” the Michigan Department of Natural Resources said in a news release.

Park-goers can still access Tawas Point on foot, the DNR says, but will find the pavilion, lighthouse, gift shop, and Tawas Point Grille closed for the season. Also closed are the Fox Den and Tawas Bay cabins, though a yurt and two mini-cabins are open. Portions of the Sandy Hook Nature Trail are also closed.

The park’s day-use area is open, and limited parking is available near the contact station.

The modern campground is open, but many sites are unavailable. Information available camping is posted online at Michigan.gov/TawasPoint.

Other closures related to high water along the Great Lakes:

* Hammond Bay State Harbor is closed for the 2020 season.

* Ludington State Park’s Jack Pine Campground is closed until further notice.

* Muskegon State Park’s Channel Campground will not take advance reservations during the 2020 season.

* Lime Island Recreation Area is closed for the 2020 season because of submerged docks.

* Mackinac Island State Harbor’s electrical conduits are submerged, so no electrical service is available this season.

* A handful of campsites at Harrisville, Leelanau, Muskegon and Young state parks are closed.

* More than 20 boating access sites are closed.
