Area jobless rates improve but still bad
A whopping 15.6% of Alpena County workers were out of a job in May, the Michigan Department of Technology, Management, and Budget said in a news release Thursday.
While that is an improvement over the 18.5% unemployment rate last month, it is still four times higher than the 4% unemployment recorded a year ago.
Presque Isle County’s rate improved from 28% in April to 22% last month, compared to 5.7% in May 2019. Montmorency County improved from 34% to 25%, compared to 7% in May 2019. Alcona County improved from 25% to 19%, compared to 5.5% in May 2019.
Northeast Michigan had one of the biggest declines in joblessness in the state, DTMB said.
