APS to review board apps

ALPENA – Alpena Public Schools officials will start going through applications for a vacancy on its Board of Education today.

Trustee Stephanie Shafto resigned March 24 after her day job as a nurse left too little time for board work amid the coronavirus outbreak. Wednesday was the deadline for applications. Superintendent John VanWagoner was unable to say Wednesday how many people had applied.

A separate board committee will schedule interviews with the eligible applicants.

The committee will then make a recommendation to the full board for an appointment.

“We’ll collect who applied and forward it to our board president, who will then begin to form the committee and set up committee meetings electronically so they’re open to the public,” VanWagoner said.

The person chosen will fill the seat through Dec. 31. Voters in November will elect a new trustee.

The board has to appoint someone within 30 days of a vacancy.
