Student could be expelled for threat

LINCOLN — A student who left a written threat in an Alcona Middle School bathroom on Thursday is awaiting punishment by the Alcona Community Schools Board of Education, Superintendent Dan O’Connor said Friday.

A written bomb threat was found Thursday morning and the school immediately initiated a soft lockdown. A soft lockdown is when classrooms are locked and students are not allowed in the hallways. Cell phones are also taken away from students.

The district’s technology department pulled video that helped identify the student responsible for the threat.

“We were able to narrow down our suspect pool almost immediately after the threat was discovered,” O’Connor said.

The student is suspended and faces long-term suspension and potentially expulsion, O’Connor said.

Since the threat contained specific details, middle and high school students and staff were moved by bus to the Alcona County Commission on Aging in Lincoln.

“We chose to use an offsite location to house the students for two hours and estientally neutralize the threat, investigate the situation,” O’Connor said. “We were able to deem it not credible.”

Alcona Elementary School was under a soft lockdown as well, O’Connor said, but education continued as normal. The school had more caution at its main entrance and minimized the number of students in the hallway.

It’s the second such incident in Alcona this school year.

The district also dealt with a bomb threat in September. The person responsible for that threat was also identified.

O’Connor said it’s frustrating for everyone when threats occur. He said students were expressing frustrations to one another as they moved to the offsite location.

“It’s a situation where you’re dealing with a lot of students that have a lot of different emotions and things going through their mind,” he said. “If a student makes a decision like this, they will have to suffer the school ramifications, as well as potential legal ramifications.”
