Owner of timber companies arrested

The owner of two northern Michigan-based timber harvesting companies was arrested Wednesday on eight counts of embezzlement, the Michigan Attorney General’s Office announced.

Norman Kasubowski, 53, of Petoskey, owner of Great Lakes Forest Products and Northern Timber Producers Inc., has been accused of lying to landowners about the amount of timber he took from their properties to avoid paying them the full value owed.

Each charge is punishable by up to five years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine or three times the amount embezzled, whichever is greater.
