Local school board ROUNDUP

A roundup of recent activity by Northeast Michigan school boards:

∫ The Alcona Community Schools Board of Education approved the district’s 2020-21 master calendar.

The board approved a robotics overnight field trip to Traverse City High School and an overnight band field trip to Detroit.

∫ The Alpena Public Schools Board of Education adopted Sports Medicine and Drafting and Design A and B as online courses for students and approved the City of Alpena’s agreement to collect 2020 summer taxes at 82 cents a parcel.

∫ The Atlanta Community Schools Board of Education approved capital project expenditures of $10,709.20 and accepted resignations from custodian Shannon Cadieux and teacher Darryl Keeton.

∫ The Hillman Community Schools Board of Education accepted the resignation of Trustee Craig Zimmer, effective Jan. 28, after Zimmer moved out of the district for a career change. The board also scheduled a special board meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday to interview candidates for the vacant board position.

The board approved hiring Mallory Stewart as an elementary school paraprofessional, Joe Mercer as varsity track coach, and Billy Kolcan as junior high track coach.

The board approved sinking fund expenditures of $51,126.72.

∫ The Onaway Area Community Schools Board of Education appointed Trustees Sharnon Lyon, Hugh Penfold, and Collin Hoffmeyer to the board’s Curriculum and Policy Committee, Trustees Mike Hart, Jeremy Veal, and Vanessa Dean to the Negotiation Committee, and Hoffmeyer, Penfold, and Trustee Shannon Hoban to the Technology Committee.

The board scheduled meetings at 7 p.m. the second Tuesday morning of each month, and a workshop at 7 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of June.

∫ The Alpena-Montmorency-Alcona Educational Service District Board of Education approved a $63,500 bid from Meridian Contracting Services for ceiling and insulation repairs at the district’s administration building.

The board also approved a $25,000 contract with OHM Architects, which allows OHM to develop a design proposal for future work at the administration building.

The board voted to extend Superintendent Scott Reynolds’ evaluation to the end of April. The change was made because a few board members will be absent at the board’s next meeting on March 12.

∫ The Alpena Community College Board of Trustees voted to buy 18 Cisco videoconferencing delivery systems that will be installed in regional schools and health centers, along with one dedicated delivery system for installation at the both the ACC Alpena and Oscoda campuses, for a cost to not exceed $148,250.

The board heard that Kathryn Blumenthal was hired as an office assistant for Strengthening Institutions Programs Grant and workforce development, Lauren Mantlo was hired as an education support personnel learning technology technician, and Mary Eagan was hired as director of alumni relations.

The board’s next regular meeting was scheduled for 7 p.m. March 17.
