Details released on Alpena cruise ship visits

ALPENA — On Thursday, Alpena Harbormaster Don Gilmet released more information on the Viking cruise ship that will make stops in Alpena in 2022.

The ship, which will be called the Octantis and is being built in Europe, will anchor in Thunder Bay and shuttle passengers to shore, as did the Viking cruise ship M.S. Hamburg, which made stops last summer.

Gilmet said the ship and passengers will be in Alpena on May 4, 10 and 18, as well as June 7 and 15. There will be a pair of visits in July, July 5 and again on July 13. The final visit will be on Sept. 27. They will arrive at 8 a.m. and depart at 6 p.m.

Viking Great Lakes cruise packages are available at the company’s website.

On shore excursion times and other logistics are still be finalized.

The Octantis’s pending visit was first announced earlier this week, prompting conversations about making Alpena a hub for Great Lakes cruise activity.
