Mack retires amid MSP investigation

ALPENA — Judge Michael Mack, of the 26th Circuit Court, who is currently under investigation by the Michigan State Police, announced his retirement today in a letter which was sent to State Court Administrator Milton Mack Jr.

There is no relation between the two.

The retirement comes a day after the Michigan Supreme Court announced it had voted to replace Mack as chief judge in Alpena and Montmorency counties and Mack’s replacement, Montmorency County Probate Judge Benjamin Bolser, suspended Mack from his docket.

Mack is being investigated by the MSP 7th District Headquarters in Gaylord, but details on the case and investigation have not been released.

Mack’s letter reads as follows:

“Please accept this letter as my notice of retirement, effective January 3, 2020. There is one more year left on my term. My many thanks to your office for the support and guidance they have given the court the past eleven years.”

It will be up to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to appoint a replacement to finish out Mack’s term and then an election will determine who the new judge for 26th Circuit Court will be.
