One dead in rollover crash

Responders work at the scene where a Chesterfield man was killed Saturday morning in a one-vehicle rollover crash at U.S.-23 and Shore Road north of Rogers City. Jeremy Schultheis, 44, was killed after his pickup truck left the roadway, struck multiple trees on an embankment, and flipped onto its side, crushing the driver’s side door and roof. According to a neighbor, who did not witness the crash, medical personnel tried for some time to revive the driver after he had been pulled from the vehicle.

Crash reconstruction by the Alpena County Sheriff’s Office indicated that the driver did not brake before or during the crash. With the vehicle moving at full speed at the roadway’s 65 miles-per-hour speed limit, the crash would have happened in as little as a second, reconstructionists said.

Police reported Schultheis appeared to have been texting prior to the crash.

Presque Isle County Sheriff’s Office, Rogers City Ambulance, and Rogers Area Fire Department also responded to the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
