State: Prepare for winter

utility bills

The Michigan Public Service Commission said planning ahead now can help keep winter utility bills manageable.

The utility regulator offers the following tips:

∫ Get your furnace tuned up by a certified professional so it runs more efficiently, and replace filters regularly.

∫ Talk with your utility provider about demand response or time-of-use programs, a budget plan, low-income assistance, active duty military shutoff protection, or a winter protection plan.

∫ Locking in a propane contract now can help save money later.

∫ Seal cracks around windows and doors, check air ducts for leaks, insulate attics, and perform other home maintenance to prevent heat loss.

Apply by Sept. 30 for the Home Heating Credit using Michigan tax form MI-1040CR-7.
