ALPENA — Former Alpena Public School teacher Heather Winfield, accused of criminal sexual conduct with a former student, will proceed to trial, despite a contention by the defense that a lower court should not have allowed the case to move forward to Circuit Court.

In an opinion released Tuesday, 26th Circuit Court Judge Michael Mack said the evidence presented in District Court was sufficient to provide probable cause that the defendant had committed a crime and could continue to trial.

Winfield is scheduled for trial at the end of September.
