Three brothers raising college funds with county fair food trucks

ALPENA — This week, three brothers are working at the Alpena County Fair to raise money for college.

Marcus, 17, Jacob, 17, and Jason Rash, 14, also known as the Kids Biz, are at the fair this week with two food trucks: one with elephant ears and one with fair food. The money they raise from those food trucks will go toward their college funds.

Jacob said the brothers got started in entrepreneurship when their parents bought them an ice cream truck a few years ago. After the ice cream truck got too big for them, they paid it off and bought the elephant ear food truck.

After paying off the elephant ear food truck in a year, they purchased another food truck they use to sell different fair food, such as hot dogs, brats, and nachos.

“With our elephant ear trailer, what we’re doing is we’re doing this for school and for a miniature career,” Jacob said. “We’re just hoping to raise some money so if later in life we decide to go to college for something, we have that money.”

This is the group’s second year selling elephant ears and food at the fair, and they learned that the selling goes faster as the week goes on.

“The first day is slower than molasses and it picks up throughout the week,” Jacob said.

Jacob said the most challenging part about running a food truck is logistics. He said, for example, they sometimes have a problem with electrical since different plugs are used, so they have to remake plugs for the fair.

Jacob said talking to customers and working with food has taught them values of operating a business.
