National guardsmen show their softer side Thursday while volunteering at the Huron Humane Society. A group of 40-some guardsmen from Ohio took a break from their training at the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center to volunteer around the city, an annual tradition for the group. “We just want to give back to the community because they are kind enough to let us come up here and train,” said Lt. Justin Rainier, holding a rollerfull of white paint as he oversaw volunteers wrangling a roomful of kittens.
