Alpena may have broken heat record

ALPENA – Much of Northeast Michigan was under a heat advisory on Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Gaylord.

Meteorologist Brian Adam said that, while the temperature reached 92 degrees, the heat index was 97 degrees as of 4 p.m.

“The heat index is sort of a measure, if you will, is the body’s reaction to the combination of the heat and the humidity,” Adam said. “Even though the air temperature is only 91 or 92, to the human body, it feels like 99 or 100 degrees.”

Alpena’s record high for July 19 is 93 degrees.

Adam said people should “take it easy” if they are outside by staying in the shade and staying hydrated.

He said children should not be left unattended in a car. Pets should also be monitored for heat illnesses.

Friday’s high heat index means that heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke, are possible.

Heat stroke is an emergency, the heat advisory said.

A front moving into the region over the weekend will bring cooler temperatures, according to Adam, with temperatures around 87 degrees on Saturday, around 80 degrees on Sunday, and around 76 degrees on Monday.

“The trend is certainly going down, especially after (Saturday),” he said.
