4 seek Alpena school board seat

ALPENA — Four candidates will be interviewed today and Friday for a vacant seat on the Alpena Public Schools Board of Education.

Eric Lawson, Debra Ludwiczak, Jeffrey Mindock, and Stephanie Shafto have applied for the position.

Lawson is a former Alpena County commissioner and Mindock is the artistic director for Thunder Bay Theatre.

The backgrounds of Ludwiczak and Shafto weren’t immediately clear.

The board seat became vacant in May when Jackie Krawczak resigned because of her work schedule with the Alpena Area Chamber of Commerce.

Interviews will take place today with Ludwiczak, Mindock, and Shafto at 3 p.m. and Friday at 9:15 a.m. with Lawson.

District Superintendent John VanWagoner said the board will appoint one of the candidates at its monthly meeting on Monday. That meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the Gerry Ludwig Board Room on Gordon Road.

The new board member will finish the remainder of Krawczak’s term that runs until Dec. 31, 2020.

The board has until June 20 to interview applicants and appoint someone to fill the vacant position. If the board doesn’t appoint someone by then, the Alpena-Montmorency-Alcona Educational Service District Board of Education will have to interview applicants and appoint someone.
