A 34-year-old man was arrested Thursday morning in Alpena, accused of strangling his mother.

Alpena police were dispatched to the 700 block of Merchant Street at 11:30 a.m., where the man had allegedly assaulted his mother, 63, causing serious injuries. The alleged victim was transported to MidMichigan Medical Center-Alpena and later transferred to another medical facility.

The subject was arrested and a warrant issued for the offense of assault with the intent to murder. Bond has been set at $500,000 cash/surety and with the condition of no contact with the victim.

The Alpena Police Department was assisted by the Alpena Fire Department/ambulance and the Alpena County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident remains under investigation.
