Police:Alleged shooter at Wurtsmith dies

OSCODA–An Oscoda man died Friday morning after apparently shooting himself in the head after allegedly shooting and killing another man, police said Friday.

Nathan Olais Moss, 31, died about 24 hours after Oscoda Township police replied to a report of shots fired near the decomissioned Wurtsmith Air Force Base. Upon arrival at the residence, officers found 37-year-old Rickie Lynn Cheatum Jr. of Oscoda dead on the floor from an apparent gunshot wound to the head.

Moss, the alleged shooter, was unconscious on the floor with an apparently self-inflicted wound to the head.

Witnesses told police the two men had been in a verbal altercation, during which Moss gained access to two handguns. Moss and Cheatum both lived in the same residence, according to Oscoda police.

Moss was transported by Iosco Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital and then was transported downstate, where he died about 12:30 a.m. Friday.

The Iosco County Sheriff Department, Michigan State Police, Alcona County Sheriff’s Department and the U.S. Forest Service also responded to the scene.

The incident remains under investigation.
