Man killed, other wounded near Wurtsmith

OSCODA — One man is dead from a gunshot wound to the head and another is injured from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head after an incident Thursday morning near the Wurtsmith Air Force Base.

The Oscoda Township Police Department said in a news release that officers were dispatched at about 11:40 a.m. Thursday after reports of shots fired in the residential area of Wurtsmith. Upon arrival, they found 37-year-old Rickie Lynn Cheatum Jr. of Oscoda dead on the floor from an apparent gunshot wound and a 31-year-old male, whom police did not identify, unconscious on the floor with an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

That wounded man is the alleged shooter, police said, and both he and the victim lived in the same house.

The wounded man was transported first by Iosco Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital and then was transported downstate for further treatment.

Witnesses told police Cheatum and the alleged shooter had been in a verbal altercation, during which the alleged shooter gained access to two handguns.

The Iosco County Sheriff Department, Michigan State Police, Alcona County Sheriff’s Department and the U.S. Forest Service also responded to the scene.

No further information was provided. The incident remains under investigation.
