Dr. James Van Wagnen is celebrating 45 years of his optometric practice in Alpena.
He graduated from Indiana University College of Optometry in 1973. He moved to Alpena to start practice with another doctor and, six months later, decided to open his own practice in the old Kane Building.
Five years later, Van Wagnen bought his own building at 1035 U.S.-23 N. and is still in practice there today.
He and his wife, Paula, have enjoyed living and raising two children in Alpena. He looks forward to continuing his practice for several more years.
Van Wagnen jokes about his goal of being the oldest practicing optometrist in Michigan. He also is proud of his son, Jon, who recently celebrated owning his own optometric practice in Charlevoix for five years.
Van Wagnen’s office is open on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays, and looks forward to serving Northeast Michigan for several years to come.
