RC DDA talks tourism

ROGERS CITY — Throughout the rest of this week, some Rogers City residents may be asked to complete a short survey conducted by Lake Superior State University.

The survey was discussed at a Downtown Development Authority workshop meeting on Wednesday.

“That’s a DDA endeavor. Most federal or state grants come through the MEDC (Michigan Economic Development Corporation) for projects. We need to be on the low- to moderate-income list to help capture grants to help fund some of these projects on the DDA’s plan,” said City Manager Joe Hefele.

In order to become a low- to moderate-income community, a random sample of residents is used to conduct a short survey.

During the meeting on Wednesday, the DDA also discussed tourism in the town and how they can better promote the area.

Resident Gary Rickard talked with the group.

“I hate getting these pieces (other town’s brochures) in the mail. It reminds me of the opportunities Rogers City could have about tourism, but doesn’t,” he said.

He brought up the Ultimate Fishing Show downstate and how important it would be to have representatives of Rogers City at the show to promote the marina and the town.

“Were you just looking for an entity to run the money through to sell the ads?” DDA Member Cory Budnick said.

Rickard said he was. DDA President John Budnick suggested Rickard approach the Chamber of Commerce, because they’ve gone through a reorganization.

” It seems like they don’t have a direction right now. We should have a DDA and joint chamber meeting,” said DDA Member Jim Przybyla.

Hefele said the meeting is coming.

“It’s scheduled for mid October,” he said. “I hesitate to say too much because we need all the groups — the chamber, the city, the festival committee — in one room, one meeting to talk.”

The board also discussed different places for signs to direct drivers to the downtown from the U.S.-23 and M-68.

More discussion on the issue and other topics were tabled for the next DDA meeting.
