Conklin, Stone, Kowalewsky win in PI

ROGERS CITY — Presque Isle County voters on Tuesday sent Katy Conklin and Erik Stone to November to compete for Presque Isle County probate judge and Vicky Kowalewsky on to the fall in the county register of deeds contest.

According to unofficial results, Conklin had 1,243 votes and Stone had 1,159 to county Prosecutor Ken Radzibon’s 956. Kowalewsky had 1,692 to challenger Darrin Darga’s 619.

Conklin, 60, is executive director of Hope Shores Alliance, a service provider for victims of domestic violence, stalking, dating violence and sexual assault. She has been a licensed attorney for 22 years. She graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor’s degree in social work and is a graduate of what was then called the Thomas M. Cooley Law School.

Stone, 65, graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor’s degree in 1975, and in 1978 from Wayne State University with a law degree. After graduation, he worked in Detroit at the law firm Dickinson Wright from 1978 to 1996. He has since practiced law in Presque Isle for 18 years.

Incumbent Probate Judge Don McLennan announced his retirement from the bench earlier this year.

Kowalewsky was appointed county register of deeds after her predecessor, Kathy Karsten, died.

Darga is currently Presque Isle’s chief deputy clerk and has been working in the county clerk’s office for over three years.

“I’m humbled by my show of support from the community, and I am grateful for all the votes,” Kowalewsky said, adding that she thanks everyone for coming out and voting for her and looks forward to the next few months.
