ACC hires Herman as new Foundation executive director

ALPENA — Alpena Community College has hired Brenda Herman to be the new ACC Foundation executive director and executive director of development.

Herman takes over after Executive Director Penny Boldrey announced her retirement, which takes place in July.

“I’m so honored to accept this position with the college and I know I have some really big shoes to fill,” Herman said.

From everyone Herman has talked to, she said it’s very evident Boldrey did a wonderful job raising money for the college.

“I’m excited to step into those shoes, try my best to fill them and keep that momentum going forward,” she said.

Herman will work as the Hospice of Michigan philanthropy director until her official start date of June 4. She was born and raised in Alpena and graduated from ACC in 1996. She earned a bachelor’s of science degree in business administration from Michigan Technological University in 1999. She also is a member of the Rotary Club of Alpena.

The executive director of the foundation serves as the leadership for the ACC Foundation. This means Herman will handle responsibilities such as planning, directing and coordinating development activities for the college including students groups, faculty and staff fundraising efforts; developing and maintaining relationships with volunteers, donors, prospective donors and alumni; and ensuring the gifts are administered to honor the donor’s intent and foundation requirements. Herman also will report to College President Don MacMaster and serve on various committees.

“Brenda impressed the search committee due to her passion and her ability to present effectively,” MacMaster said.

He said she understands the community and her preparation for the interview was spot on.

“I’ve been working in development for the last five years and Alpena Community College is such a well-respected organization in the community. I can’t imagine who wouldn’t want to work here. I want to be able to use my skills and work to give back to our community in terms of fundraising for such a great organization, that’s going to prepare so many capable people who will make our community grow and flourish. It was just an opportunity I couldn’t pass up,” Herman said.
