Alcona County Fair begins Tuesday
ALCONA – The Alcona County Fair takes place Tuesday through Saturday. From the midway to the livestock, Alcona County Fair has something for everyone.
“I get excited about everything with the fair,” Alcona County Board of Commissioners Chair Kevin Boyat said.
Boyat said the admission price this year is $5 per person 13 years and older; however, there are several special pricing options available throughout the week. Tuesday is free admission all day with $5 armbands for rides; Wednesday features $1 for seniors admission, $15 armbands with free rides for those 17 years and younger from 2-4 p.m.; and Thursday and Friday admission is $10 per vehicle with $5 armbands from 2-6 p.m and $15 from 6-11 p.m. Saturday’s armband prices will be $15 with the time blocks of 1-6 p.m. and 6-11 p.m.
“(Tuesday) is more of a family night with a cheap cost. It’s really gotten to be quite a big thing. There’s free cake and ice cream for Smokey (Bear’s) 70th birthday where there are kids games, they can meet Smokey and have their picture taken,” Boyat said.
Boyat said all of the events occuring, from the traditional truck and tractor pulls on Friday to the bump and run on Saturday, are included in the price of admission.
Livestock judging will occur on Tuesday and Wednesday, the livestock market sale on Thursday and the horse shows will follow on Friday and Saturday.
“(The market sale) helps the kids out with their schooling,” Boyat said.
New this year is a show by Dothraki Skydogs 4-H Club titled “Journey through the Horse” that will occur Wednesday at 1 p.m.
“The group will perform with costumes at the horse arena. They have kids of all ages, music, they even coreographed it themselves. It should be fun for them, something different,” Boyat said.
The fair board steak fry and the draft horse pull will occur Wednesday. Tickets for the steak fry are available at the fair office.
“Two hundred and thirty New York strips have been ordered,” Boyat said.
Wednesday’s events also includes free laser tag from 4 -8 p.m.
“This is our first time trying this. Les Thomas headed the event. It’s going to be across the track in the woods. That’ll bring a little different twist to it,” Boyat said.
Daily entertainment includes the Alcona Classic Tractor and Engine Club display, horse drawn carriage rides, the midway, a children’s bicycle giveaway by D&R Show, LLC. and Barnyard Express.
Barnyard Express performed by Farmer John is another new feature to the fair this year. Farmer John will have three shows daily.
“He brings in animals and really smart dogs to teach about life at the farm. We’ve been trying to get the show for years and years, this year it worked out well,” Boyat said.
Boyat said local fire departments will entertain Saturday afternoon with a smokehouse, vehicle extrication and a water ball tournament.
Also on Saturday will be motocross racing by Dirt Inc. and the bump and run.
“(Dirt Inc. does) a good job putting on (the race),” Boyat said.
