DEARBORN – Gas prices in Michigan are up 62 cents from last week, setting a new 2026-high. Michigan drivers are now paying an average of $4.93 per gallon for regular unleaded. This price is 72 cents more than this time last month and $1.75 more than this time last year.
Motorists are paying an average of $74 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline; an increase of about $23 from 2025’s highest price last August.
According to new data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), gasoline demand increased from 8.55 million barrels per day to 8.79 million. Total domestic gasoline supply also increased from 206.9 million to 207.7 million barrels, as well as gasoline production from 9.3 million barrels per day to 9.6 million barrels.
At the close of Friday's formal trading session, WTI fell $1.61 to settle at $100.30 a barrel. The EIA reports that U.S. crude oil inventories decreased 0.6 million barrels to 423.4 million barrels, 1% above the five-year average.
“Michigan drivers are seeing a significant increase at the pump, with gas prices climbing 62 cents in just one week and reaching their highest levels since July 2022,” said Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson, AAA-The Auto Club Group. “This sharp jump highlights the continued volatility of the global oil market and its impact on drivers.”
Compared to last week, Metro Detroit's average daily gas price increased. Metro Detroit's current average is $4.92 per gallon, about 62 cents more than last week's average and $1.73 more than this same time last year.
The most expensive gas price average was in Ann Arbor where the average cost of a gallon of gas was $4.97. The least expensive gas prices were in Marquette where it was $4.79 a gallon.

Enroll in savings programs. AAA Members who enroll in Shell’s Fuel Rewards program can save 30 cents per gallon on their first fill-up and 5 cents per gallon each additional trip to the pump.
