ALPENA — Violet Crane, 21, was sentenced to six months in jail and two years probation on Monday in the 26th Circuit Court in Alpena.

Crane is charged with one count of unlawful driving away in a motor vehicle, which she pleaded guilty to on Feb. 2, The News previously reported.

Crane has multiple criminal charges for other incidents spanning from July through December. She will be serving the six months jail and two years probation for those charges as well, with at least 87 days credit for time already served.

Crane was arrested for the unlawful driving away charge at the scene of an officer-involved shooting on Dec. 22 in Alpena. The charge is related to an incident that occurred on Nov. 15 and was unrelated to the events of the shooting.

Crane was a passenger in the allegedly stolen vehicle which resulted in the officer-involved shooting that killed 35-year-old Jackson Jacobs of Alpena.

Defense Attorney Julie Miller said in court that Crane has been trying to avail herself of any services that have been available to her. For instance, Crane successfully completed residential treatment in the spring.

Miller argued that Crane should receive only a term of probation.

Alpena County Prosecuting Attorney Cynthia Muszynski recommended to Judge Ed Black that Crane receive six months in jail. The guidelines for Crane’s sentence were between six to 10 months.

Black said he doesn’t think people give Crane enough credit for how far she’s come.

“I’m not saying you haven’t done any wrong, you 100 percent have, and you’re gonna pay for those,” he said. “But when you get out, as long as you treat people with respect, they’re gonna treat you with respect.”

Troy Wardlaw, 56, entered a plea deal Monday. He pleaded guilty to count one for possession with intent to deliver 50 to 450 grams of cocaine. Count two for weapons felony firearm was dismissed.

Wardlaw was a passenger inside a vehicle pulled over by the Michigan State Police on Sept. 28. Approximately 425 grams of cocaine were found in the vehicle.

Wardlaw possessed 425 grams of crack cocaine and over $2,000 cash when he was arrested. That amount equates to approximately one pound of cocaine.

Wardlaw was previously scheduled for jury trial on Wednesday but that will be canceled due to the plea deal. He will be sentenced at 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 8.
