Michigan Senate votes to grant immediate effect, send SB 304 to Whitmer’s desk
MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. — The Fair Access to Mackinac Island coalition released the following statement after the Michigan Senate granted immediate effect on Senate Bill 304 and sent the bill to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer for her signature.
The Senate approved immediate effect by a vote of 28-0, making clear where Michigan’s state elected officials stand on the issue.
Statement from Fair Access to Mackinac Island coalition spokesperson John Sellek:
“Small business owners, employees, residents, tourism officials, and Michigan families thank the Michigan Senate and House for moving quickly to clarify the City’s existing powers to regulate ferry service in the event of a monopoly, which is the case today.
“The now-monopolized ferry service is the only practical “road” to Mackinac Island and, according to city ordinance and franchise agreements, should be regulated like a public utility. This is how we ensure the protection of consumers, small businesses, and the economy of Michigan’s crown jewel.
“The City of Mackinac Island is the only Michigan city that cannot update its own charter without legislative approval, so the passage of SB 304 is essential to letting City residents move forward with this vital effort.”
