ALPENA – Families delivering at MyMichigan Health can have added confidence in the quality of maternity care they receive, as all five of the health system’s birthing hospitals have earned Gold or Platinum designation from the Michigan Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (MIAIM). MyMichigan Medical Centers in Alma and Sault Ste. Marie earned the highest award, the MIAIM Platinum Designation, and MyMichigan Medical Centers in Alpena, Midland and West Branch earned the MIAIM Gold Designation.

These designations recognize hospitals that provide safe, high-quality care for mothers and babies. Hospitals earn these designations by implementing nationally recognized and proven patient safety practices, improving patient care and participating in statewide programs to help prevent serious pregnancy and childbirth complications. In addition, hospitals participate in ongoing education, staff training and emergency preparedness drills.

“We are honored to have hospitals recognized at both the Platinum and Gold levels,” said Tonia VanWieren, system nursing director at MyMichigan Health. “These designations show our commitment to providing evidence-based, patient-centered maternity care and continually striving for excellence on behalf of the families we serve.”

MIAIM hospitals focus on initiatives to prevent and quickly treat serious health problems during pregnancy and childbirth such as heavy bleeding, high blood pressure, infections and reduce low-risk cesarean births. They also focus on treating every patient with respect, compassion and person-centered care.

“At MyMichigan Health, we provide comprehensive maternity care through a team of experienced obstetricians, certified nurse midwives and advanced practice providers dedicated to supporting families throughout pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum journey,” VanWieren continued. “Achieving the Platinum and Gold level designations reflects the teamwork of caregivers and staff across MyMichigan Health who are committed to continuous improvement to ensure the health and safety of mothers and babies.”
