Alpena Water Treatment Plant update
According to the City of Alpena Water Utilities, the water treatment plant is currently operating on backup generator power. The drinking water system remains fully functional, and the water being produced continues to meet all state and federal safety standards. The water is safe for consumption.
However, due to the ongoing situation, the wastewater (sewer) system is currently inundated and is not operating at full capacity. Because of this, residents are strongly encouraged to limit all non-essential water use until further notice. Reducing water usage will help prevent sewer backups, overflows, and potential damage to the wastewater system.
This notice applies to:
– City of Alpena water and sewer customers
– Alpena Township sewer customers connected to the municipal system
Residents are asked to temporarily avoid activities such as:
– Running dishwashers or washing machines
– Taking long showers or baths
– Excessive flushing or other high-volume water use
According to the press release, essential water use such as drinking, cooking, and basic sanitation may continue. City crews are actively working to restore full sewer system operation as quickly as possible. Check back for updates.
