ALPENA — The Zonta Club of Alpena recently presented a check to MyMichigan Health Foundation representing proceeds from their 18th annual Zonta Walks for Women. With a strong show of community spirit and purpose, the event reaffirmed its commitment to supporting those affected by breast cancer and championing the importance of early detection. This year’s walk resulted in a contribution of $5,764 to the Breast Health Fund at MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena, strengthening local access to vital breast‒health resources.

Eileen Budnick, treasurer of the Zonta Club of Alpena, presented the donation to Steve Hand, imaging services manager at MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena. Hand expressed heartfelt gratitude for the long‒standing partnership, noting the tangible improvements it has made possible.

“Our collaboration with Zonta has helped make so many enhancements possible – from adding a Breast Health navigator to providing Bella Blankets and Radiant Wraps, to major technology upgrades like our 3D mammography machine. Their support has had a direct and lasting impact on the care we provide, Hand said.”

He went on to underscore that early detection remains one of the most critical factors in improving outcomes, “Our region continues to fall below the national average for regularly scheduled breast exams, which is deeply concerning. Events like Zonta Walks for Women help raise awareness and encourage women to prioritize their health. With advancements in technology, including 3D mammography, and the recent renovation of our Breast Health suite, we are committed to providing both exceptional care and a comfortable, patient‒centered experience.”

Jo Sims, president of the Zonta Club of Alpena, emphasized that the Walk continues to evolve in ways that strengthen community education and engagement. “Inviting the organizations who receive support from this fundraiser to meet with participants has been incredibly meaningful. It keeps the focus on how the funds are used, the resources available locally, and the importance of early detection. It also gives participants a chance to learn directly from the people doing this work every day.”

The Zonta Club of Alpena is eager to build on this momentum as it prepares for next year’s walk, which will celebrate its 20th year and take place on Oct. 3. With every step, every conversation, and every dollar raised, the organization continues to strengthen its mission of empowering women, supporting local healthcare, and fostering a community where early detection and compassionate care remain top priorities.

The MyMichigan Health Foundation continues to support patients and families across the region by raising funds for essential equipment, services, and programs.
