Cavitt responds to Whitmer’s State of the State address

LANSING — State Representative for Northeast Michigan Cam Cavitt issued a response on Thursday to portions of Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s State of the State address on Wednesday. He chimed in on the lack of funding provided to northern Michigan after the historic ice storm last year, as well as her past and current plan for roads and education.
– “When ice storms hit northern Michigan, our people needed help. Michigan House Republicans proposed $100 million in funding to help these communities, but our progress was stopped by Democrats in the senate. The Democrats are preventing us from getting meaningful aid to the communities that are in need. Our people cannot afford to be overlooked.”
– “People are rightly frustrated due to energy surcharges related to the ice storm damage. Passing the legislation to give our communities $100 million in relief would help people tremendously. Unfortunately, the Democrats care more about passing pork funding for projects downstate. It’s absolutely disgusting. The governor has shown time and time again that she’s willing to put the interests of lobbyists and bureaucrats above the people of northern Michigan. It’s disheartening, but it’s what we’ve come to expect.”
– “Whitmer campaigned on fixing the roads, but under the Democratic trifecta, they never came up with a clear plan for road repair across the state. It took House Republican involvement to make major progress on funding that would help repair local roads, not just our highways. We can’t afford to ignore entire communities simply because they exist outside of heavily populated areas.”
– “Whitmer ran on a platform of improving education in the state, and look where we are now. Under her reign, our children’s reading comprehension scores have dropped. It’s apparent that she cares more about lining the pockets of lobbyists than putting books in our kids’ classrooms. Considering she has already raided our teacher’s pensions to fund unnecessary spending, none of this comes as a surprise.”
