Learning how to ice fish

The Cub Scouts of Alpena Pack 3092 and Harrisville Pack 913 visited Fletchers Landing Resort in Hillman on Saturday to learn more about ice fishing. The kids were taught about safety on the ice, how to tie a fishing knot, how to auger and clean out a fishing hole, what types of bait to use, and how to jig to catch fish.

Staff at Fletcher’s Landing, as well as representatives from Michigan Outdoors were on hand, as were several highly experienced ice fishermen from around the state who visited to help teach the kids. At the end of the event, all of the kids were given a new fishing pole donated by the Michigan Outdoors Report.

Also, thanks goes out to Alpena’s Cops and Donuts for donating the donuts for the event and to Mom and Pop’s Bait Shop and Party Store for donating the lice bait and participating in the activities. A special thanks also goes out to Josh Kraft from Lansing for teaching the kids about ice fishing as he was a scout himself growing up.
