HARRISVILLE — Sabrina Horton, 22, was arraigned in the 81st District Court in Alcona on one charge of first degree child abuse.
Horton’s case is linked to that of Nickolas Allen Corey who was charged with one count of first degree child abuse on Wednesday in the 81st District Court. His bond is set for $500,000.
According to a press release from the Alcona County Sheriff’s Office, an infant child has extensive injuries from suspected child abuse. The investigation into the suspected child abuse began on May 24.
Magistrate Courtney Bachelor entered a not guilty plea to the charge on Horton’s behalf.
Her bond is set at $450,000, 10%. Attorney Justin Wilson, appearing via Zoom as the first appearance attorney, requested a $100,000, 10% bond since Horton has no prior criminal record and she and her family are of limited means. Additionally, her family would be able to get her to court without a problem and there is no reason to believe that she is a flight risk.
Horton also appeared via Zoom from the Alpena County Jail.
“Any cash bond is likely going to be difficult for her to post,” Wilson said. “I would ask for a significant reduction in that bond otherwise it is effectively, you know, the same as denying bond.”
“As far as the facts of this case, the only thing really we know for certain is that there is an infant who suffers from serious injuries,” Wilson said. “There is another person who has been charged with this offense.”
Bachelor denied the reduction of bond.
“Due to the allegations within the complaint and the lack of ties within the community I am going to continue the bond that was posted over the weekend, the $450,000 cash/surety 10%,” Bachelor said.
Bachelor was clear in what her expectations for Horton are, should she make bail and get out of jail.
“Do not assault, harass, intimidate, beat, molest, wound, or threaten the following person: minor child victim, any person under the age of 18 or Nickolas Allen Corey,” she said. “Do not have any direct, indirect, or third party contact with the following persons: minor child victim, any person under the age of 18, and Corey.
Horton’s next hearing, a probable cause conference, is scheduled at 10 a.m. on Jan. 20 in the 81st District Court. Her preliminary examination is scheduled at 11 a.m. on Jan. 28.
Corey’s next hearing is at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
