Harrisville man charged in fatal 2024 crash

ALPENA COUNTY, MI. Troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Alpena Post began an investigation into a fatal crash that occurred on March 11, 2024, which claimed the lives of two people.

On March 11, 2024, at approximately 7:48 p.m., troopers responded to a report of a two-vehicle personal injury crash on US-23 near Partridge Point Road in Alpena Township. The preliminary investigation indicated that a pickup truck with three occupants was traveling south on US-23 when it crossed the centerline and collided with a northbound Chevrolet SUV. The pickup truck was driven by a then-21-year-old Harrisville man. His passengers included a then-19-year-old man from Ossineke in the front seat and a then-21-year-old man from Lincoln in the back seat. The SUV was driven by a then-28-year-old man from Ossineke.

The 19-year-old passenger in the pickup truck was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the SUV was extracted from his vehicle and later died at the hospital. The driver of the pickup truck and his other passenger, the 21-year-old man from Lincoln, were both transported to MyMichigan Medical Center in Alpena and treated for serious injuries.

The MSP continued their investigation into the cause of crash. The troopers’ findings were submitted to the Alpena Prosecutor’s office for review. The driver of the pickup truck has since been identified as 23-year-old Devin Matthews of Harrisville. He was arraigned on January 26 in the 88th District Court in Alpena County on the following charges:

1. Homicide – Murder – Second Degree

2. Homicide – Murder – Second Degree

3. Homicide – Manslaughter – Involuntary

4. Homicide – Manslaughter – Involuntary

5. Operating – While Intoxicated Causing Death

6. Operating – While Intoxicated Causing Death

7. Reckless Driving Causing Death

8. Reckless Driving Causing Death

9. Operating – While Intoxicated Causing Serious Injury

10. Reckless Driving Causing Serious Impairment of a Body Function

The bond was set at $100,000 cash or surety. Matthews next court appearance is on Feb. 3 at 9:30 a.m.
