Santa visits Alpena neighborhoods

ALPENA – In December of 2020, the Alpena City Firefighters L623 needed a way to spread some Christmas magic during the pandemic. So, they teamed up with the guy in the big red suit, Santa Claus.

Captain Chris Morrison has been with the Alpena City Fire Department for 20 years. He spoke about the thought process that led to the tradition which stems from the days of COVID-19.

“We wanted the community to have something to look forward to. Everyone was kind of stuck inside yet from Covid.” Morrison said.

With help from Santa and all his wonderful helpers, they decorated a fire truck and took that magic to the streets of Alpena over three evenings.

“About 30 minutes before Santa takes off, everyone meets at the station. We make sure we are organized and our route is mapped out correctly,” Morrison said.

After all, Santa’s security is of utmost importance, and he is a busy guy.

Morrison discussed what he looks forward to in year number five of this tradition, which wraps up tonight.

“My favorite part of doing this is the reaction from the kids. They patiently wait with anticipation and as soon as we are visible, it’s nothing but smiles and joy,” Morrison said.

On Sunday, year five of the tradition kicked off as Santa made his way through Alpena neighborhoods and by places like the Holiday Inn, downtown businesses, and many neighborhoods.

Monday the route took Santa down State Avenue, by Starlite Beach, as well as in the area of the high school, as well as the Alpena Housing Commission.

New traditions are forming based around Santa’s trip to Alpena. Morrison shared a text he received from his mother.

“I just heard from my mom actually. Her and the grandkids are looking forward to it. My mom is putting together a meal tonight for the grandkids. They are going to dress warm and patiently wait for Santa to cruise by.”

This evening will be your last chance to catch Santa and his firefighting friends cruising through your neighborhood.

Among the places you can catch a glimpse of him are, JJ’s Steak & Pizza House, Mango’s Tequila Bar, Bay Athletic Club, and neighborhoods near Nowicki’s Sausage Shoppe.

Santa begins his final route at 6 p.m. tonight.
