ALPENA — A 35-year-old Alpena man was killed and an Alpena police officer was injured during an officer-involved shooting after a traffic stop in Alpena turned dangerous in the early hours of Monday morning.
The Alpena man, who has yet to be identified, was pronounced dead from his wound after being transferred to MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena.
The name of the officer who was injured has not been released. They received treatment at MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena before being transferred to MyMichigan Medical Center Midland.
It is unknown when the officer will be released from MyMichigan Medical Center Midland.
MSP Seventh District Public Information Officer Ashley Miller said she could not release the name of the deceased, per policy.
Alpena Police Chief Eric Hamp told The News on Monday that the officer’s injuries were not life threatening, but serious.
Officers from the Alpena Police Department and troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Alpena Post conducted a traffic stop after midnight on Grant Street, near Lawn Street, in Alpena Township because the vehicle was allegedly stolen.
The Alpena man, an occupant of the vehicle, was shot by an Alpena Police Department officer after he brandished a knife and cut the officer’s hand.
The knife was the only weapon that the man had, Miller said.
William McLeod, a resident of Birchwood Meadows Apartments, which is located off of Grant Street, said he saw red lights through his apartment window at the time of the incident, according to a comment he gave to The News on Facebook.
He said he heard the words “put the knife down” allegedly said by one of the officers and again by a woman. Then he said he heard gunshots, three of them.
Violet Crane, 21, was arraigned for one charge of unlawful driving away in a motor vehicle in the 88th District Court in Alpena on Monday.
Crane is charged for an incident that occurred on Nov. 15 with a warrant issued on Dec. 15, according to MiCourt.
Judge Ed Black confirmed to The News that Crane was a passenger of the vehicle involved in the officer-involved shooting and was arrested at the scene.
Hamp said that all Alpena Police Department police officers wear body cameras and all of the video footage from the traffic stop and officer involved shooting has been turned over to MSP which is conducting the investigation.
Both of the Alpena officers were placed on paid leave, which Hamp said is a standard procedure for officer-involved shootings.
Miller said she cannot put a timeline on the length of the investigation.
Monday’s officer-involved shooting is the second to occur in Alpena County, both of which occurred about a month apart.
On Nov. 27, a 33-year-old man was shot and injured by deputies from the Presque Isle County Sheriff’s Department after deputies attempted a traffic stop on a pickup truck driven by the alleged-wanted felon.
That officer-involved shooting occurred in Alpena County after a police chase. The deputies involved in that incident were also placed on paid leave and Miller said that investigation is still ongoing.
