Officer involved shooting in Alpena

ALPENA — A 35-year old man is dead on Monday after being shot by law enforcement after he cut an Alpena police officer with a knife while pulled over for driving a vehicle that was allegedly stolen.

The name of the deceased or the officers involved have not been released by police.

In the early hours of Monday, the Michigan State Police (MSP) Alpena Post conducted a traffic stop on a reported stolen vehicle on Grant Street. near Lawn Street in Alpena Township.

The preliminary investigation indicated that during the traffic stop, an occupant produced a knife and cut an officer from the Alpena Police Department. The officer discharged his department-issued firearm, striking the suspect. The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

The suspect has been identified as a 35-year-old Alpena man. The injured officer who sustained a laceration to the hand was treated at the hospital.

The MSP Investigative Response Team and MSP Crime Lab responded to process the scene and continue the investigation. Two officers from the Alpena Police Department are on paid administrative leave until the investigation is completed.

This incident remains under investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
