ALPENA – Beginning Monday, Davey Resource Group, Inc, (DRG) will begin the inventory and assessment of approximately 7,000 trees on public streets, parks, and public facilities. The project is part of on-going efforts within Alpena to better manage trees, minimize the effects of future storm damage, and assure the community has a healthy, sustainable urban forest.
DRG will use handheld computers loaded with information and aerial photographs from existing Geographic Information System (GIS) to mark the location and record specific details of each of the trees. After the fieldwork is complete, the City will have its inventory data uploaded into an inventory software system that enables dynamic data management.
DRG will also provide a formal report identifying the overall condition of the city’s urban forest and provide recommendations moving forward.
This $160,000 Project is entirely funded through an Michigan Department of Natural Resources Urban and Community Forestry Grant with no match required by the city.
DRG employees will not review trees on private property and will not attempt to contact residents, but will be active throughout the community until the end of January.
