ROGERS CITY– Presque Isle County resident Theodore Beck, 65, could have additional charges added to the four charges of fourth degree criminal sexual conduct filed against him now.
In May, The News reported that the MSP Alpena Post was contacted regarding an alleged sexual assault complaint against Beck. The alleged assaults were reported to have occurred in Rogers City over a span of several months.
The News does not not use the names of victims of sexual assault.
The News reported in June that Beck was seen in Presque Isle County’s 89th district court for a pre-trial hearing regarding the charges against him. During that hearing, Beck’s attorney, Matt Wojda, informed Judge Michael Ekdahl that there were ongoing discovery issues and asked for the preliminary examination to be adjourned until July.
Ekdahl had informed Beck that he has the right to a preliminary examination within 21 days of his arraignment, and that the new examination date would lie outside of the prescribed 21 days.
Following the hearing in June, Beck waived his preliminary examination in the 89th District Court in Presque Isle. Afterwards, his case was bound over to the 53rd Circuit Court.
In August, Beck was accused of allegedly violating his bond by coming into contact with the complaining witness. Beck appeared in court in October for the bond violation hearing and docket call. Wojda informed Judge Aaron Gauthier that there had been no additional bond violations at that point.
On Monday, Beck was scheduled to appear in court for a bond violation hearing and docket call but both were adjourned. Gauthier called Beck’s case out of order on Monday in the 53rd Circuit Court in Presque Isle County, according to a video recording.
On Monday, Gauthier said that he had spoken to counsel in chambers, a meeting in which legal matters can be discussed in private by the defense and the prosecution. Gauthier stated that Presque Isle Prosecuting Attorney Zakary McLennan is considering filing additional charges.
Gauthier did not clarify what those charges are.
Wojda was present on Beck’s behalf, but Beck himself was not in attendance. Gauthier excused Beck’s absence.
Beck’s next hearing in the 53rd Circuit Court will be at 9:10 a.m. on Dec. 1 for a bond violation hearing and docket call.
