ALPENA — The City of Alpena is pleased to announce the appointment of Andrew L. Marceau as the next Fire Chief of the Alpena Fire Department (AFD). Incoming Chief Marceau brings more than 27 years of fire service experience, a proven record of leadership, and a long-standing commitment to community safety.

Incoming Chief Marceau began his career with the City of Alpena Fire Department in 1998 and has served the community in multiple capacities of increasing responsibility. Most recently, he has served as Deputy Chief and Community Risk Reduction (CRR) Officer from July 2024 to November 2025, where he supported the overall leadership, management, and administration of the department. His work focused heavily on operational readiness, emergency service delivery, and furthering Alpena’s growing Community Risk Reduction initiatives.

Prior to that role, Marceau served as the department’s Community Risk Reduction Captain (2019-2024), leading critical programs such as smoke alarm installations, fall-risk assessments for older adults, pre-fire planning, and fire safety outreach in area schools. His earlier assignments included serving as a Lieutenant (2015-2019), where he led daily shift operations, incident command functions, and all-hazards emergency responses.

Marceau is also a highly experienced Fire Investigator, with more than 50 investigations conducted since 2010. His extensive technical expertise includes determining fire origin, analyzing fire patterns, and preparing comprehensive investigative reports.

Beyond his work at AFD, Incoming Chief Marceau serves as a member of the State Fire Safety Board, appointed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer. He is an active contributor to MI Prevention, sits on multiple community committees, and has long supported youth sports through coaching and leadership roles, including serving as the Blue Line Club President.

“I am honored to lead the Alpena Fire Department and continue serving the citizens of Alpena,” Marceau said. “Our department is filled with talented, dedicated professionals. Together, we will continue strengthening emergency services, supporting our firefighters, and expanding the Community Risk Reduction programs that help make Alpena a safer place to live.”

“Andy has dedicated nearly three decades to serving and protecting the Alpena community, and his leadership has already made a meaningful and lasting impact within our fire department,” said City Manager Rachel Smolinski. “His experience, integrity, and passion for public safety, coupled with his commitment to continuous improvement and community risk reduction, make him the right choice to lead AFD into the future.”

Incoming Chief Marceau will officially assume the role of Fire Chief on Sunday and will take his oath of office at the regular Alpena Municipal Council meeting at 6 p.m. on Dec. 1.
