AAA offers essential tips to winterize and secure your home

In a press release on Wednesday, American Automobile Association (AAA) insurance experts urge homeowners to take proactive steps to protect their property from seasonal hazards and potential burglaries.

“Frozen pipes, power outages, and increased burglary attempts are all more common during this time of year,” Adrienne Woodland, spokeswoman for AAA The Auto Club Group, said in the release. “With a few simple precautions, you can protect your home, your family, and your peace of mind.”

The release states that homeowners should keep travel plans off social media to reduce the risk of theft or unwanted attention. They also recommend homeowners hold their mail and newspapers through the post office or ask a trusted neighbor to collect them daily.

According to AAA, homeowners should shut off their water supply before leaving to prevent flooding from burst pipes. This should be done by using the main valve or individual shut-offs for toilets, sinks, and appliances — open faucets and flush toilets to drain the remaining water from the lines.

The release also states that homeowners should set their thermostat to at least 55 degrees or higher to prevent pipes from freezing.

“Consider a smart thermostat that allows remote monitoring and adjustments,” the release states.

Setting indoor and outdoor lights on timers to simulate an occupied home is another suggestion from AAA to ward off potential burglaries. AAA recommends locking all doors and windows, including those in the basement and garage. Alarm companies should also be alerted to when a home will be left unoccupied.

Other AAA suggests included the following:

— Unplug non-essential electronics like televisions, computers, stoves, and microwaves to reduce fire risk and save energy.

— Turn off and drain outside water faucets, disconnect garden hoses, and cover outside faucets with insulated protectors.

— Arrange for a snow removal service to clear driveways and walkways.

— Close the chimney flue to prevent drafts, moisture, or curious critters from sneaking in.
