Recycling facility offering free cardboard recycling for businesses

ALPENA — The Northeast Michigan Materials Management Authority (NMMMA) is encouraging businesses throughout the county to take part in an initiative to increase cardboard recycling in the community, according to an NMMMA press release.

NMMMA states they are offering free cardboard recycling for businesses for the remainder of 2025. A business membership is normally required for business partners to use recycling drop-off locations and to bring materials to the facility located on M-32.

According to NMMMA, cardboard remains one of the most significant components of commercial solid waste. Recycling this material not only conserves natural resources and energy but also reduces landfill use and disposal costs for businesses.

NMMMA explains in the release that they accept clean, flattened cardboard at drop-off locations and at the facility. Materials should be free of contaminants such as plastic liners, Styrofoam, or excessive food residue.

NMMMA invites businesses to deliver recyclable cardboard during normal operating hours, which include Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. For large volumes, businesses should contact Executive Director Bailey Barr, according to the release.

“By recycling cardboard, businesses help support the local circular economy–transforming used materials into new packaging products while conserving energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” NMMMA states in the release. “NMMMA remains committed to partnering with the business community to enhance regional recycling efforts and promote environmental stewardship throughout Northeast Michigan.”

NMMMA encourages the community to “stay tuned” for more information on new opportunities for community business partners and their business membership program in 2026.

For additional information regarding commercial cardboard recycling, or to coordinate service options, please contact Bailey Barr at 989-884-2560 or Director@alpenarecycles.org. Community members can visit NMMMA’s new website at Alpenarecycling.org for more information on recycling and NMMMA services.
