Alpena Township Fire department thrives in community service

Alpena Township, MI — Between Saturday at noon and Sunday at 7:30 PM, the Charter Township of Alpena Fire Department was actively engaged in both community outreach and emergency response, highlighting the department’s commitment to public safety and education.

On Saturday, the department hosted its Annual Fire Prevention Open House, welcoming 80 community members to the station. Attendees received valuable fire safety education, hands-on demonstrations, and family-friendly activities aimed at increasing awareness and preparedness during Fire Prevention Week.

While engaging with the community, the department responded to 17 calls for service, including a motor vehicle accident on US-23 that required a temporary road closure for approximately 45 minutes. The crash resulted in six individuals being transported to the hospital. The department reminds all drivers of the importance of yielding to emergency vehicles, staying alert, and always wearing your seatbelt–simple actions that save lives.

Later that evening, firefighters responded to a well-involved residential structure fire that displaced a family of three. The fire occurred late on Saturday and required mutual aid from Maple Ridge Township, Wilson Township, and the CRTC Fire Departments.

Crews worked diligently to contain the blaze and ensure the safety of all involved.

“We are proud of our team’s dedication to both emergency response and community education,” said Fire Chief Tim Baker in a press release. “This weekend was a powerful reminder of the importance of fire safety awareness and the strength of our mutual aid partnerships.”

The department encourages all residents to review their home fire escape plans, check smoke alarms, and stay informed on fire safety practices. For more information, visit https://www.alpenatownship.com/fire-department or contact the fire station at 989-356-0297.
