Free and reduced breakfast and lunch at APS at least until Sept. 30
ALPENA — State funding that provided free lunch and breakfast for all students will continue until Sept. 30, a Friday press release from Alpena Public Schools explained.
The release stated that the State has not passed a new budget yet, so the school district does not know yet if meals will be funded starting Oct. 1.
However, nearly 60% of families in the Alpena Public Schools service area can qualify for free and reduced breakfast and lunch at school.
“Adequate nutrition is absolutely vital to the daily success of our students,” the APS release said. “It is shown to improve concentration, mood and behavior for students.”
Although families won’t have to pay for meals at this time, they must still complete qualification forms for their local school. Completed forms allow schools to qualify to receive state funding to pay for the meals as well as funds for instructional specialist staff (reading interventionists, math tutors, academic and behavioral aids), teaching supplies and materials, counselors and social workers, school nurses, professional learning for staff, parent and community engagement supplies and activities, and technology for students.
“Please help your child to have their best opportunity to succeed academically and socially this school year,” the APS release said. “It is very important for families to complete and return the paperwork needed to continue this option for their students.”
Documentation can be completed at alpenaschools.com. Any family that needs assistance completing the application can contact their child’s school. If you have questions, contact Food Service Director Rachel James at 989-358-5021 or jamesr@alpenaschools.com.
